چکیده

Quantitative interpretation of electron spectroscopy is almost always dependent on the understanding of multiple scattering effects. Monte Carlo simulations are often used to model multiple scattering effects, as this method provides for a conceptually simple framework for incorporating both elastic and inelastic scattering processes. In this paper, we demonstrate that when small-angle deflections are important, diffraction effects become significant, and straightforward Monte Carlo simulations are not expected to be valid. However, a simple modification to the Monte Carlo procedure is presented that uses cluster-derived elastic scattering cross sections rather than those derived from isolated atoms. In this way we can incorporate diffraction effects in the simulations. Results from electron momentum spectroscopy are presented to illustrate these effects. These modified simulations greatly improve the agreement between experiment and theory, and this approach builds a bridge between Monte Carlo and diffraction-based interpretations of experiments.

Sea Surfaces Scattering by Multi-Order Small-Slope Approximation: a Monte-Carlo and Analytical Comparison

L-band electromagnetic scattering from two-dimensional random rough sea surfaces are calculated by first- and second-order Small-Slope Approximation (SSA1, 2) methods. Both analytical and numerical computations are utilized to calculate incoherent normalized radar cross-section (NRCS) in mono- and bi-static cases. For evaluating inverse Fourier transform, inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) i...

Acoustic Scattering From a Fluid-elastic-solid Interface Using the Small Slope Approximation

In this paper the small slope approximation is applied to acoustic scattering from a randomly rough fluid-elastic-solid interface. Expressions for the zeroth-, first-, and second-order bistatic scattering cross sections are derived. Numerical results are obtained for the zeroth-order small slope approximation for Gaussian and modified power law surface roughness pectra and are compared with tho...

A Method to Reduce Small-Angle Scattering in Monte Carlo Device Analysis

Ionized-impurity scattering is an anisotropic process showing a high preference for small scattering angles. In a Monte Carlo simulation of a semiconductor device many small-angle scattering events have to be processed, although the contribution of these events to carrier momentum relaxation is small. A new method is presented which reduces the amount of smallangle scattering very effectively. ...
